'Dark and Dingy' Underpass Project

DARK AND DINGY NO MORE!
ActivateYYC was honoured to play a small part in funding and supporting this brilliant project. The Ramsay Community Association (@ramsaycommunityassociation) and local artists Caitlind R.C. Brown (@incandescentcloud) and Monica Ila (@monica.ila) have been working behind the scenes on this 2000 sq. ft mural project for over 2 years! The @darkdingyunderpass initiative has now been recently completed, and is a standout example of community engagement, volunteerism, and neighbourhood-led renewal. They transformed what was once a deeply unpleasant space, into something brighter, more fun, and more reflective of the community that uses it everyday.

Over 150+ volunteers came out over a 3.5 week span to hand paint this highly detailed mural, containing stories and secrets about the neighborhood, gathered from locals. This project wasn’t without a few major challenges, including one of their main partners Ol’ Beautiful (@ol_beautifulbrewingco) experiencing a devastating fire, water restrictions causing delays and hampering their ability to clean the walls and brushes, as well as general bureaucracy and permitting difficulties associated with a unique and grassroots project such as this.

Through it all, the organizers were incredibly resilient and pushed through. Congratulations to this group, the artists, the volunteers, and the communities of Ramsay and Inglewood for bringing such an incredible project to life within our amazing city.
