To help bring sports and active lifestyles to girls all around Calgary, Eastside Memorial Football Club set out to host a series of grassroots girls soccer scrimmages at various parks around northeast Calgary. Using a $750 ActivateYYC microgrant, they were able to hold multiple events that over 100 girls attended.
All of Eastside Memorial’s girls – of all ages and skill levels – came out to play and girls from all around the neighbourhood were invited to come and try out soccer in a free, welcoming environment. The older Eastside girls encouraged and mentored the younger neighbourhood girls, and it was immediately noticeable how the younger neighbourhood girls’ confidence increased. Eastside Memorial also provided shinguard to any girls who did not have them so they could play safely! Interested attendess were also invited to a real soccer practice at the Genesis Centre. The City of Calgary was able to help this project along by helping Eastside Memorial book green spaces for their events.
