The Highland Park CA worked with the community and volunteers to agree on an artist to design a mural to paint on the pavement at the intersection at the SE corner of the CA grounds, which has seen a problem with cars speeding & not stopping for the Stop sign.
They did a survey of area residents & gathered suggestions from attendees at some of our summer events for the art design, then liaised with the artist, Chris Olguin, to incorporate those suggestion. The were able to proceed with the plan to paint the mural on the pavement at that intersection, as well as paint the new curb bump-outs installed by the City. They received immediate feedback from surrounding residents that the curb bump-outs had resulted in fewer incidents of cars not stopping.
For the paint the pavement project , the group prepared the pavement by sweeping / power-washing / leaf-blowing it the day before, the planned painting day ended up being very wet and rainy, so the paint didn’t fully hit the pavement until the Sunday of the weekend.
“We have had amazing feedback from residents about the project, that the art itself is beautiful, and that it seems to slow vehicles down, even for those who aren’t required to stop. We were able to involve many new volunteers with the project, some who were new to the community, and some who had just never volunteered before, or hadn’t in some time.”
